The “1 in 5” Reality: According to data from the Hampshire Young Carers Alliance (HYCA), it is estimated that on average, 1 in 5 pupils in every classroom in Hampshire is a young carer.

The Official Baseline: The 2021 UK Census formally identified 2,690 young carers across Hampshire. However, local authorities and charities acknowledge that this is a significant under-representation, as many young people do not realize they are carers or choose not to declare it

School Tracking: The 2024 Hampshire schools census actively identified and tracked 2,024 young carers attending local schools, while HYCA actively works with and supports over 1,800 young carers each year through its localized networks (which includes Romsey).
